I read a little snippet on Humans Of New York’s feed the other night where he interviewed a youth mentor. The mentor talked about how kids are living such a tough life lately and how because of the pressure they receive, they become mature adolescents. Children, expected to be adults before their time, simply because they don’t have anyone to tell them how to be any different.
That’s a sad truth. We live in a society where teenagers becomes moms at such an early age because they don’t understand how to live responsibly. And then there are boys who become men before they are supposed to because their fathers are never present and they are forced to man up.
You might not see these people in your neighborhood, but they’re there. And they need to be cared for. I have so much respect for people who make it their life priorities to take care of the youth, because they understand just how valuable they are - they are the proof that the world will still go on, and it’s by mentoring these youths that we’re sure to have the kind of world we want to live in. I hope that someday I can be as brave as these people who give their lives for these youths. In the meantime, I’ll do what I can.
So you know, being aware of teenage pregnancy and the effects there of, makes me appreciate couples like Arie and Stella much, much more. Since the beginning, Arie has promised Stella that he will never lay a hand on her nor kiss her until their wedding day. He wants their first kiss to be at the altar. In the age of raging hormones, this is highly admirable, people! I hope that there are more Arie and Stella out there who will show their respect to each other by showing control. You guys are awesome and you are a promise that this world will be a much better place, because people like you are in it!
